7 songs.

08Jun08

They say you should never talk about religion, politics, or music with someone you plan to sleep with, presumably because a mismatch in these subject areas can really kill attraction. But when Reverse Cowgirl tapped me for the 7 Songs meme, I had to do it. So, to killing attraction…

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring summer. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.

My list is fairly quiet, and it wasn’t so quiet when I started. I think this is because New York’s blazing hot right now and I’ve wilted.

(1) Castanets, “No Voice Was Raised.” – A friend introduced me to this track this weekend and it’s so, so good.

(2) The National, “Brainy.”

(3) Film School, “Compare.” – At any given moment, I’m listening to something built of layered, droning guitars. Right now, that’s this song.

(4) Noir Désir and les Têtes Raides, “L’Etoile Absinthe.” – I have a longstanding love of Noir Désir, in spite of Bertrand Cantat’s fucked-up past.

(5) Portishead, “Threads.” – The new Portishead isn’t quite as life-altering or seductive as Dummy, but Gibbons’ voice is still hypnotic.

(6) Jennifer Charles and Oren Bloedow, “La Rosa.” – Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields, Lovage) has a voice that feels like pure sex to me. I wasn’t going to list this song, but it’s hot and my air conditioner’s busted and it sounds the way I feel, sort of drowsy. This is from La Mar Enfortuna, an album based on Sephardic melodies.

(7) Cat Power, “Love & Communication.” – Also drowsy. It’s locked into several of my playlists, and while I could’ve gone for something more upbeat, it’s like a hundred degrees in here. I need it slow right now. Slow and emotive.

I’ve uploaded this list to a muxtape, and you can find it here.

So now I need to pick seven other people. I’ll double up on one of Reverse Cowgirl’s picks to apply pressure on Kasia, foremost, and then these people/entities: Clayton Cubitt, Nikola Tamindzic (who keeps posting interesting music), Together in Disharmony, Boinkology, Warren Ellis (did it), Anthony Volodkin, and Chelsea.

  1. i was excited to hear that portishead had a new album coming out, then quite disappointed when i heard it. it was the same thing when the album portishead came out. i fell in love with dummy the first time i heard it – it took no effort. maybe ill like this one more if i listen a few more times, but i doubt it.

  2. I like having sex to “L’Etoile Absinthe.” I al checking out the other songs. I like the first one a lot…

  3. 3 me

that death cab for cutie song about “i will possess your heart” kills me every time i hear it.

  4. Love #4, and “Numb” by Portishead is still a favorite.

  5. mmm…sounds
    i like sounds.

  6. Thanks for tagging me anyway. I usually ignore memes, but people seem to genuinely want to know what others do with this one, rather than using it as a social nod…

  7. I love your playlist here! It’s oddly fitting that this entry reminds me of the movie “9 Songs.” A relationship on the downhill slope, sex sex sex, and intersperses of concerts in between.

  8. The sad thing is I’m not actually into music right now.

I know that sounds bizarre, but the thing is I go through phases: sometimes I can’t work at all without listening to something, sometimes I desperately crave silence. Now is one of the latter times.

If Boinkology, as an entity, were to be into music, it would all be selections from BoinkMusic.

That I’ve never even heard of a single one of the bands on the playlist says something, although I’ll justify it because we are not exposed to music in our social spheres, but we have to seek out music if we want to experience it. The exiting thing is that I will give each one of the selections a try and see if any of them fit my taste. Thank you for expanding the horizons. We went to see a band recently called Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Their music has me acting like an idiot in the car as I use the steering wheel as a drum set. If I want to be transported I’ll listen to Pat Metheny, particularly a track called “To the End of the World” from the We Live Here album. It’s what I want played at my funeral. My life as a song.

I personally wouldn’t sleep with anyone who didn’t like Portishead. Fact. If they can’t get into ‘Dummy’, they’re unlikely to get into me – metaphorically as well as literally. Music, more importantly my heightened sense of hearing and juxtapositions with sex, mean a lot to me.

  11. D,

If you have a chance/time, you may want to liten to Kings of Leon’s song ‘Soft’:

    Or here, live:

  12. Jennifer Charles… yes.

    Do you like Cristina Branco?

  13. Ooooh, yess. Bring on the drony guitars!

Awwww, there is something so beautiful and poetic about you, D. There is always at least one thing in your writing, even if I only I visit the blog for two minutes, that captures me. I remain so very proud of you. Thank you for continuing to write!

I’m going to check out the music. Thanks for the post.
