paying for it.

“Paying for it” is an irrational taboo, as most taboos are. I assume it’s because we’re a particularly myopic society that rarely recognizes its own hypocrisy, a society that, to my mind, applies its un-nuanced thinking to capitalism (the American dream), and morality, and the places where sex and money meet. We profit from pornography and we use sex to sell; we condemn strippers and imprison prostitutes.

Today’s the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Let’s hope.

    Yes—violence, prejudice and legislation.

More than prejudice, it’s the height of hypocrisy, considering the number of Escorts working in the metro DC area and servicing those in power. Trixie is the only person I’ve seen so far who put a fine point on it, and I think Trixie is right. (via Calico) “Our problem is not just with women charging money for sex, our problem is with women SAYING NO to sex with men unless the men meet conditions set by women.”

i hadn’t thought of that one, and in the face of all of the “no means no” ads when I was growing up (or was I in college?) I figured we’d come to a place where we accept that a woman’s body is her own to do what she wants with. Clearly, still not the case.

I eat at restaurants, take clothes to a cleaner, hire mechanics and accountants. I have hired a maid service. All those transactions seem utterly ordinary. The “paying for it” taboo has never made the least bit o’ sense to me.
